Farewell to Singer Songwriter Jackie Trent at 74

British singer-songwriter Jackie Trent, known for penning the theme to TV soap Neighbours and hits sung by Petula Clark and Frank Sinatra has died at 74 (March 21, 2015). Trent was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme on September 6 1940, the daughter of a miner. Her career began when she was 11 years old and won a talent competition at the Theatre Royal, Hanley. Throughout her childhood she sang at working men’s clubs and dance halls, and at the age of 15 she moved to London.She secured her first recording contract in the early 1960s in London.

When Trent was in her early twenties she met Tony Hatch, who would become her closest professional collaborator as well as her husband. The first song they wrote together, Where Are You Now (My Love), went to number one in the UK Singles Chart in May 1965.She formed a prolific and successful song writing partnership with him and the couple started writing hits for Shirley Bassey, Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson, Des O’Connor, Val Doonican, Vikki Carr, and Dean Martin among others.  In later life, Trent made a return to the stage, touring the UK in the musical High Society, and in 2004 played a series of concerts.

“Where Are You Now” was Hatch and Trent’s first composition together, and one of many hits they would have as a song writing partnership.The single gave Trent her only No. 1 hit when it reached the top of the UK Singles Chart for one week in May 1965. The song was featured in the popular television series It’s Dark Outside.
